How a Positive Attitude Can Help You Heal

Blog photo for Positive AttitudeGoing through physical therapy is never easy. But on the road to recovery, people have proven time and again that a positive attitude helps the healing process.

Here are three examples of how a positive attitude can transform your future:

Eric LeGrand

The Rutgers college football player became paralyzed after suffering a spinal injury during a game in 2010. LeGrand lost his identity as a football standout but found a fierce resilience that echoes the same spirit he had as an athlete. Although doctors predicted he had less than a 5 percent chance of regaining neurological function, LeGrand’s has been weaned off a ventilator and can now move his neck, shoulders and trunk. In an article LeGrand penned in Elite Daily, he credits his recovery thus far to five principles:

  • Attitude is half the battle.
  • Don’t look back, and always ignore the “what if.”
  • Celebrate small victories.
  • Embrace your support system and be thankful.
  • Pay it forward.

Christopher Reeve

The actor we all knew and loved as Superman became a quadriplegic in 1995 after a horse threw him to the ground during an equestrian competition. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and on a portable ventilator. Despite all odds, Reeves’ injury did not stop him. Before he died in 2004, he became a vocal advocate for others who suffered spinal-cord injuries and human embryonic stem cell research. He founded the Christopher Reeve Foundation and co-founded the Reeve-Irvine Research Center.

Sonora Webster Carver

She rode diving horses in the 1920s until she suffered retinal detachment after she plunged into the water off balance with both eyes open. The accident, which occurred while riding the horse Red Lips on Atlantic City’s Steel Pier, did not deter her from riding, something she did for many more years. The 1991 movie “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” was based on Carver’s life and memoir. Her story inspired others to never give up and to dream the impossible, no matter the odds.
